Donald Trump’s arrest in Georgia on August 24th sparked uncertainty regarding his 2024 election campaign. Notably, while Trump’s legal troubles have gathered much attention, many political analysts argue that it may strengthen, rather than diminish his supporter base. Possible legal consequences, logistical complications, and the Justice Department’s reluctance to indict the former president further complicates the situation. Trump’s legal challenges, political moves, character, and image are being and will continue to be closely watched and debated by the nation over the coming months.
The former president’s recent indictment brought even more attention to his upcoming 2024 presidential run. To gain deeper insight into the prospective election, I met with government teacher Mr. Mark Deal to discuss potential implications Donald Trump’s third indictment could have on his campaign.
Provide a general overview of Trump’s August indictment.
“My understanding is that he has been arrested on various charges, … [for] trying to influence officials in Georgia to change the outcome of the election,” said Mr. Deal.
His indictment has left many wondering about the potential implications it will have on his political career and election.
How could this indictment impact Trump’s campaign?
“Who knows? … I think we can assume that in the short term it probably will help him in the Republican primary… As far as the general election goes, will it hurt him? Probably. Will it hurt him enough to cost him the election? Who knows?” said Mr. Deal.
Trump is a controversial figure, so it’s hard to know the social consequences his actions will bring him. Given this reputation, one may wonder whether his recent arrest will further promote his popularity.
Has Trump gained popularity among potential voters since the recent indictment?
“I don’t know that it’s brought him popularity yet. I think there is some evidence that it has solidified his support. So people who already supported him feel even more strongly that he is being targeted and victimized, and so their support has increased.”
What will happen if he is convicted? What happens if he gets elected?
“If you mean is prison possible? Technically, absolutely. … I don’t think we’ll have a sentence by the election anyway… The current assumption is if he gets elected, the investigation will go away… There is an open question as to whether or not he has the authority to pardon himself,” Mr. Deal said.
Is it possible for a president to be in office amidst criminal charges?
“[A] president being in the middle of a criminal charge? No… The assumption is that if he gets elected, the investigation will go away,” said Mr. Deal. “The Justice Department currently has a memo and has had for, I think about 20 years at least, that they will not indict a sitting president.”
Although it is unsure where this investigation may lead, the indictment will have an impact on his campaign regardless of the legal route it takes. Those competing against Trump will likely use his legal battles as fuel for the drive of their own campaign. Overall, Trump’s legal battles will likely continue to raise questions and create controversy throughout the nation for months to come.
