Despite being such a small city, Falls Church has more dessert spots than people might expect. Some places are bakeries, some are ice cream delicatassens and some are better suited for a sit-down experience rather than a quick grab-and-go. What makes each place unique is their specialty and theme. To organize this assortment, The Lasso has created a guide to the best desserts around Falls Church.
The Happy Tart
The Happy Tart’s reputation is centered mostly around their quiche and turnovers. I had low expectations for their classic apple turnover, which, like all of their items, is gluten free. Contrasting my expectations, however, the turnover had a crisp and buttery shell and a smooth and soft cinnamon-apple filling that wasn’t completely overpowering. The only drawback is that it is extremely messy and there were lots of crumbs everywhere.
Kyo Matcha
Kyo Matcha stands out due to its signature item displayed on a large poster in their front windows: the Matcha Parfait. With layers of cornflakes, red beans, mochi, and ice cream, it feels like a dessert that shapeshifts with each bite. Its biggest strengths were the crunchy, chewy, and smooth texture combination that worked surprisingly well. The red bean and matcha flavors together were also pleasant. The strong matcha flavor of the ice cream might not work for everyone, but there are also milk and milk/matcha mix flavors to choose from.
Paris Baguette
Having come to Falls Church in late 2025, Paris Baguette is probably the easiest crowd-pleaser on this list. It offers many creative pastries for both snacking and meals, and also sells cakes. The Chocolate Supreme Croissant stood out the most, due to its unique circular shape. The croissant had a chocolate custard cream inside, with a chocolate shell and crispearls decorating the top. It looked and tasted amazing. It is extremely indulgent for a celebratory treat, but may be too heavy for some.
Lil City Creamery
Since 2015, Lil City Creamery has been a local favorite despite its small size. The signature flavor is Steam Oil, which may not sound appealing. However, it tastes much better than it sounds. The base is coffee ice cream, with chocolate and carmel ribbons intricately weaved through, making it more sophisticated than a basic chocolate or strawberry. Its memorable and unusual flavor combination makes it a love-it or leave-it choice.
Lazy Mike’s Delicatassen
Lazy Mike’s Delicatassen stands out because it leans into more old-school desserts and ice cream flavors instead of hopping on trends. Its milkshakes are a clear example of this. A coffee milkshake is thick, smooth, and has a comforting taste that isn’t artificial or overly loaded with sugar. However, some might not find it appealing, as it does not show as much creativity as other spots on the list.
Tatte
The most recent cafe to come to Falls Church, Tatte, radiates a polished feel and is deeply rooted in Israeli and Mediterranean culture. One of the most popular items, the Morning Bun, demonstrates that some pastries can shine in their texture rather than complexity. The croissant dough, cinnamon sugar coating and swirly inside make for a crisp outside and a soft center. It felt refined and easy to keep eating for a filling and light breakfast.
Little Falls Cafe
Little Falls Cafe has a romantic feel, unlike most places on this list. The exterior design strongly emulates the European vintage aesthetic. The staff dress in traditional aprons from European flea markets which adds to the atmosphere. The menu’s core is built around galettes, which are savory gluten-free buckwheat crepes originating from France. However, the fillings come in both savory and sweet choices such as the blueberry-mint crepe. I tried the Rich Dark and Handsome sweet crepe. Filled with warm nutella, crushed peanuts and a salted butter caramel drizzle, it made for a delicious chocolatey treat. The food was excellent, but the seating is relatively limited and the building is very creaky.
Midori Tea House
The Midori Tea House’s main focus is on its matcha and range of basque cheesecakes, which are frequently ordered because of the matcha trends. The Ube Basque Cheesecake has a caramelized top and a creamy center with a light and earthy ube taste that makes it easy to keep eating. Additionally, the food and drinks are presented in a beautiful way that one might call “instagram worthy.” However, there are only a few staff members so the wait takes a while.
Looking at all these places, this little city has a wide variety of dessert places to try, each one with its unique vibe and items. Some places are perfect for an after-school hangout with friends, while some are better for a weekend study date. The variety makes dessert not just about sugar, but about style, mood and knowing what each place does best.
