Pumpkin spicing things up

Isabel Costa and Clara Kasik

Fall in Falls Church is finally here, and along with Halloween window painting and colorful trees, we have another favorite sign of the season: pumpkin flavored food. We tried out as many pumpkin flavored foods as we could find. Here are our top six.

#1: Bakeshop: Pumpkin Chocolate Chunk Bread

The best pumpkin item we tried was Bakeshop’s Pumpkin Chocolate Chunk bread, one of the many pumpkin themed treats the coffee shop/bakery offers. The bread was very moist with lots of chocolate chips and you could definitely taste the pumpkin in it. It would definitely taste incredible heated up on a cold morning.

#2: Lil’ City Creamery: Pumpkin Pecan Ice Cream

Ice cream isn’t necessarily the first thing you think of when the weather gets colder, but with Falls Church’s unpredictable weather you never know when it’ll be humid and hot. For those muggy days, Lil’ City Creamery has a pumpkin flavored ice cream with crunchy pecans. It tastes just like pumpkin pie filling and would be perfect in a shake or on a cone.

#3: Bakeshop: Pumpkin Cupcake

Bakeshop didn’t miss with their second treat, a pumpkin cupcake with fluffy buttercream frosting. It tasted like a pumpkin spice latte with whipped cream and a caramel drizzle on top, all in cupcake form. Once again, we could definitely taste the pumpkin and loved the caramel drizzle, but it might not be a great breakfast treat because of how rich the frosting is.

#4: Northside Social: Pumpkin Ginger Bread with Coconut Icing

A Saturday morning favorite for many Falls Church residents, NOSO is having no trouble staying seasonal with their food. This bread certainly wasn’t lacking in flavor. Although it wasn’t bad, the bread had little chunks of ginger, a very strong spice. Because we aren’t too fond of ginger, this bread was not really for us, but if you like ginger, this bread is certainly for you!

#5: Bakeshop: Pumpkin Pie Macaron

The pumpkin pie macaron from Bakeshop definitely met our expectations. Macarons are usually small and light, and this was exactly as described. We could taste the pumpkin in this only a little bit because the filling had more of a bite. The macaron was not bad at all, we only wish there was more of it!

#6: Northside Social: Pumpkin Spice Snickerdoodle

Another NOSO baked good, the pumpkin spice snickerdoodle did not disappoint. Although it was not strongly pumpkin flavoured, it still had a lot of the fall spices that we look for in a seasonal cookie. Ginger and nutmeg were some very prominent tastes that added a kick to the cookie. The cookie itself was very soft, something every good snickerdoodle should be, but was just lacking the pumpkin taste we were looking for.
