Football
Meridian’s Varsity Football team has struggled compared to other sports this fall. Meridian’s record stands at 1-4 with their lone win being against Dominion. The team’s strong point has without a doubt been the running game, led by junior Oumar Thompson. The offensive line has performed exceptionally well, executing their blocks with impeccable timing. The offensive line has consistently demonstrated remarkable synergy, creating crucial openings and providing the quarterback with the protection needed to execute plays effectively. They have accumulated over 150 yards on the ground in all 5 of their games, and their success has come when they can run the ball efficiently. The Mustangs aim to capitalize on their strong running game to turn the season around.
Field Hockey
Meridian’s Varsity Field Hockey is one of Meridian’s most dominant fall sports teams. Headlined by their upperclassmen, the team is a powerhouse within the division. So far, their record stands at 10-1- 1, with four games remaining before the playoffs. Team defense has been a particularly strong point for the Mustangs. They have had more games with shutouts than total goals allowed. The Mustangs have produced nine total shutouts throughout the season, and have only allowed eight goals on the year. Their astounding team defense has led to the impressive record, and the playoffs will provide yet another opportunity to showcase their talent.
Volleyball
Meridian’s Varsity Volleyball team is one game under .500 with five games left in the season. They are 4-5 in district play, with playoffs around the corner in three weeks. In the games the Mustangs have won, they have been dominant, always winning 3-1 or in a sweep against other teams. The entire team has been effective from sophomores to seniors. When Meridian has their offense going, they have been unstoppable, going on quick runs to put other teams away. The Mustangs volleyball team looks to make the playoffs with five district games left to end the season.
Meridian boys volleyball takes on their first season; they are 5-6 with 4 games left. The Mustangs have had some big wins over local teams like Marshall and Langley. They have also defeated some larger schools, like Woodson. For their first season, the entire team has been playing well together. The boys hope to make a final postseason push with their season winding down.
Cross Country
Meridian’s Cross Country team has certainly pulled their weight for Meridian sports this year. A highlight of the season for them was when both the boys and girls teams placed third overall at a delayed meet in Warren County. Their latest meet was the Gettysburg Invite, on Oct. 5. The girls placed 12 out of 30 teams, while the boys placed 22 out of 30.
Golf
The Meridian Golf team has been phenomenal so far this season, finishing second in the district. On Monday, Oct. 7, the Mustangs beat Kettle Run to advance to states. The golf team then traveled to JMU to claim the class 3 state championship.
Cheer
The Meridian Cheer squad has been solid in a couple of competitions this season. They placed second in a competition on Sept. 25 at home. At districts on Oct. 9 at Liberty High School, the squad performed well against some tough competition.
