On Jan. 9, the Mustangs’ girls basketball team beat the Brentville Tigers 37-27, improving their record to 9-0 after a brilliant fourth-quarter performance.
The Mustangs started the first quarter off strong, holding the Tigers to just six points, and eventually managing to pull away with the lead. They ended the first quarter 11- 6.
The second quarter, however, was a much closer contest. Meridian struggled to extend its lead, despite brilliant passing and build-up play. Brentsville took full advantage of this, and put up seven points compared to Meridian’s three, closing the gap.
Exiting halftime with a 14-13 lead, Meridian had no margin for error.
“We always go into every game being as prepared as possible. Our team was really locked in during practices leading up to the game, and we had a game plan that we were very confident in,” head coach Chris Carrico reflected.
The third quarter saw both teams trading points back and forth, neither one able to get much of a lead on the other. One last layup from the Mustangs put them up by two at the buzzer, ending the third quarter up 21-19.
The fourth quarter followed much of the same tempo as the third, up until Meridian was able to pull away with three consecutive lay-ups late in the game.
With the clock winding down, Brentsville began to intentionally foul to get possession back. However, they were unable to capitalize with their time on the ball, and the Mustangs pulled away even further, winning the game 37-27.
Coach Carrico was ecstatic after the win. “It’s a confidence builder anytime you are able to win a game against a good team. The team responded well to a competitive, hard fought game, which can only help as we move forward in the season.”
