Boys Basketball
The Meridian boys basketball team has enjoyed a strong start to their season, especially considering they lost a handful of seniors last year. As of Jan 8, the Meridian squad boasts a 6-1 record. Head coach Jim Smith credits the success so far this season to the team’s drive and motivation. “We have the potential to be a special group,” Coach Smith said. The Mustangs hope to make a playoff run with just over a month of basketball left in their season.

Girls Basketball
The Meridian girls basketball team has remained undefeated throughout the season so far, with a perfect 9-0 record. After significant wins against rivals James Madison, whom they finally beat after 3 unsuccessful years, and Brentsville High School, with a 37-27 Mustang victory. This win was significant in order for the Mustangs to compete for regional and state titles. Those future tournaments are looking very promising for the girls basketball team, who hope to advance as far as possible this season.

Wrestling
Of the six varsity weight classes that the Mustangs compete in, every wrestler has a winning record so far this year. Despite this, the Mustangs lose most tournaments and competitions because they only compete in 6 out of the 14 possible weight classes. Practices often consist of intense conditioning and cardio, as well as half an hour of live wrestling. “[The practices] teach us that the process and the commitment matter until the end and make you realize that your hard work led to your achievements,” senior Paul Stankevich commented.

Winter Track
As of Jan 8, the Meridian winter track team has had a total of five meets. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams have placed well so far, as much of their success has come from strong practice regimes and standout individual performances, as noted by freshman Devon Mirza. “The team has really improved as a collective, and I think that’s due to the coaches and the great jobs they’ve done with the drills,” Mirza commented.

Gymnastics
Gymnastics notched the highest score in the team’s history at the first meet of the season and has so far placed 2nd at the district competition. As of their last meet, they have bagged several podium finishes: Rebecca Degnan placed third on the uneven bars, Petra Oleson placed second on the vault, and Sienna Dawson placed third on the floor and third in the all-around. This meant the team scored 126.25 points and placed third. The team looks forward to more success to match these early wins as the season progresses.

Swim and Dive
As of Jan. 8, Meridian’s swim and dive team has had three meets. The boys team is 4-1, with a close win over Wakefield at a dual meet, a dominant win over James Wood and Fauquier at a tri-meet, and a split with Millbrook and Manassas Park at another tri-meet, while the girls team is undefeated with a perfect 5-0. “Despite losing many seniors, the team is still well-suited for both swimming and diving,” said senior Ty Schmittel. The team will continue to work and improve to make states for yet another season.
