In a historic night at home, the Mustangs cruised past the Brentsville Tigers 70-41. The game, highlighted by strong transitions from the Mustangs, gave them their 15th win of the season.
The crowd held their breaths as senior Will Davis was just 13 points shy of 1,000 career points.
The Mustangs immediately set the tone to start the game, pressing the Tigers and coming up with numerous steals which resulted in points. However, the score remained tight to close out the first quarter as the Mustangs would hold a 19-12 lead.
The boys would distance themselves from the Tigers in the second quarter, scoring 18 to take a 37-22 lead heading into the half.
With the 1,000-point mark in reach, Davis entered the third looking for his shot.
Just two minutes into the third, Davis drilled the deep three cementing his name in Mustang sports.
Celebration commenced both on the court and in the stands, Head Coach Jim Smith would call a time out to acknowledge the moment. After the game, Davis directed the credit for the accomplishment to his teammates and coaches.
“I definitely wouldn’t be here without the help of my teammates and coaches who put me in the right positions in order to achieve this milestone,” Davis reflected.
The ‘Stangs carried that energy throughout the remainder of the game, pouring onto the lead and locking the Tigers down on defense, extending the advantage to 56-33 at the end of the third quarter.
The fourth quarter saw much of the same and the Mustangs would ultimately defeat the Tigers in a 70-41 blowout.
While Davis’ accomplishment secured its place in history, Coach Smith commented that his impact goes beyond the record.
“[Will] has been a great leader for us all year … he presents problems for the defense,” Coach Smith said.
With Davis on the floor the Mustangs hold a tremendous 72-14 record over the course of four years, Davis himself also has over 30 double digit scoring games throughout his high school career.
The Mustangs commanding win over their regional opponent Brentsville Tigers gives them a 15-3 record this season with their next game set for Feb. 10.
