The Mustang girls basketball team is having a phenomenal 2025-26 season, boasting a 14-1 record. The girls are currently ranked 1st in the division (9-1 record) and are led by starting point guard Charlotte Lieu. She’s been at the helm of their success, averaging 16.7 points per game, and is currently ranked 7th overall in the state of Virginia for three-pointers made (45 total this season).
There have been many factors contributing to her success. “My previous club season helped me develop my skills and learn to play under control. In high school, my teammates challenge me in practices and put me in the right situations in the games to succeed,” Lieu explained.
Lieu has been able to help her team to one of the most impressive records since 2021; they were 9-0 in the region and 24-2 overall.
On top of the Mustang’s almost perfect record, Lieu also has many personal achievements off the court. “I am most proud of starting the season 10-0, but receiving Player of the Week from Washington Post and NovaHoops has also been cool,” Lieu said.
Despite all these achievements, every star athlete faces challenges throughout the season. Athlete burnout is common, and stress from the intense schedule is expected.
“The toughest challenge so far is continuing to bring 100% energy to every practice. Since it’s a long season, it’s easy to feel unmotivated some days, but I’m lucky as I have my teammates and coaches who keep me going and push me to bring my best,” Lieu stated.
The Mustangs have made notable improvements since last season. The team aims to place in the regional and state tournaments and has worked incredibly hard to reach their current position.
“I think my team’s communication has helped us have a successful season so far. We make it our priority to support each other, as it contributes to a positive collective energy that keeps us going. As long as we keep that up, we will be in great shape,” Lieu described.
Basketball has had a significant impact on Lieu’s life. “The most important lesson basketball has taught me is if you don’t have confidence in yourself, no one will have confidence in you. It all begins with trusting in your own work,” Lieu illustrated.
With four games left in the season, Lieu and the Mustangs look towards the playoffs in late February.
