On Feb. 13, the Mustang girls basketball team fell to the Skyline Hawks, 56-48. Despite the loss, the girls created some dramatic moments, including a significant comeback near the end of the game. From being behind 19-2 early in the second quarter to minimizing the gap to 56-48 by the end of the fourth quarter, the Mustangs proved their resilience.
The first quarter was by far the most challenging for the Mustangs. The girls started out with a rough start, with the Hawks scoring several back-to-back layups. The Mustangs were being pushed to play their best defensive game. But regardless of their efforts, the first quarter ended with a 13 point gap, the Mustangs trailing 15-2.
After a short timeout before the second quarter, the Mustangs were determined to chip away at their deficit. With the Mustangs pushing their offensive game while sharpening their defense, they closed the gap to 29-16 at halftime.
After a pep talk from Coach Chris Carrico, the Mustangs were determined to come out strong. With several three-pointers from junior Charlotte Lieu, and many successful free-throws, the Mustangs were able to bring the score to 38-27 by the end of the third quarter, minimizing Skyline’s lead.
With the end in sight, the girls drained their energy tanks in order to create a late run. However, they fell short in their efforts, and the game ended with the Hawks victorious with a final score of 56-48.
Reflecting on the loss, sophomore center Bridget Creed commented: “It was a tough game on both sides, both offensively and defensively. But it doesn’t really matter since we’re still first in the region, so we might as well just see them in the second round of the playoffs.”
