On Thursday, Feb. 5, senior Will Davis scored his 1,000th career point and cemented his name in the Mustang basketball record books. Davis’ consistent efforts have led the team to a tremendous regular season record as they prepare to enter the playoffs.
What may be more remarkable is Davis’ journey to reach this point. While Davis’ previous seasons highlight his high school success, the start of his basketball journey began long before he donned the Mustang jersey. From age four, Davis’ biggest motivating factor was his grandma.
“My grandma took me to a nearby park and told me to shoot until my arms fell off,” Davis remarked.
Davis’ passion for basketball took off from there. During the pandemic, he was motivated to improve in the sport. This discipline proved to be a key to his success for his career. “I viewed the shutdown as time to put my head down and work hard while no one was watching,” Davis said.
His hard work has not gone unnoticed, as Mustang head coach Jim Smith commented on the effort he puts into the sport.
“His success has not happened by accident, he has earned it with hard work and time on task,” Smith noted.
However, basketball is a sport that demands strong, selfless team play, and Davis has adopted this into his playing style. Coach Smith describes Davis as a “coach’s dream” who fits perfectly into the Mustangs’ team first offense.
“I loved seeing Will achieve that milestone goal,” Smith said. “He did it the right way.”
As for the future, Davis plans to extend his basketball career beyond high school in some form.
As the Mustangs approach the playoffs, the team looks to continue their success. There is little doubt that Will Davis will play a significant part in it.
