The annual Oak Street Book Fair finished up in the last week of October. The book fair works to raise money for the FCCPS school libraries, as well as support teachers and their personal libraries.
The fundraiser has existed for many years. It started before Oak Street was renovated and has contributed significantly to our libraries over the years. The book fair is one of the main ways used to raise money for the school libraries.
“ I think we had an incredible year of book sales this year. Students were especially excited about the new Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Baby-Sitters Club Books. Other high sellers included Pusheen, Book of Guinness World Records, and Wild Robot,” Ms. Kringstad, one of the co-chairs of the book fair committee, noted. “We had an incredible group of volunteers, including some high school students, that really helped the book fair run smoothly. Overall, it was very satisfying to see that students were happy and reading.”
A big part of the book fair is also its volunteers, made up of a few high school volunteers and parents from the community. Roles include inventory, working a registrar, and packing up any unsold books.
Ms. Brooke Davis, the Oak Street librarian, plays a big role in the fair.
“The book fair is one of my favorite times of the year. I love seeing what kids buy and the pride they take in owning their own books. I also love that we make it equitable for all families to enjoy,” Davis commented.
The first night of the book fair was extremely popular and resulted in many books being sold out. Many students love this book fair and find it a great way to buy new books.
The money raised this year is going towards buying new books for the school libraries, as well as bookmarks and display items.
The book fair was a big success this year, raising about the same amount as last year. This year showed an amazing amount of support from the local community. The book fair is a great way to help the community and helps foster kids’ love of reading.
