This season, Meridian football made their way to the playoffs for the first time since 2023, facing an unfortunate exit in the first round after a tense game against the third seeded Skyline Hawks on November 13th. The Mustangs playoff entry was preceded by an eventful season, one which resulted in a 2-5 record in the region, and 4-5 overall record.
Their season opener proved to be an excellent start to their campaign, as they shutout the 6A Justice Wolves 55-0. Despite the strong start, the team struggled to deliver similar performances consistently throughout the season.
Meridian’s season also brought successes, as they would oust their fair share of opponents in the coming games, dominating Fauquier 60-22 in the homecoming game, and easily besting the Annandale Atoms 52-20 shortly after.
When asked about his thoughts on the team’s performance throughout the season and leading up to the playoffs, head coach Patrick Anderson was positive. “Our success can be attributed to our players and our coaching staff. Many of our guys have started for four years, which means they have had a lot of things thrown at them and, as such, have been able to handle adversity this season,” said Anderson.
After the conclusion of the regular season, Meridian’s postseason was dedicated to preparing for their playoff game against Skyline, a team which they had previously lost to 33-43. Nonetheless, Coach Anderson remained optimistic about the game.
“Skyline is a very good football team, with the District (and soon to be Region Player of the Year) in Zayden Burks. We have a great gameplan to contain him, and our guys have been practicing hard this week in order to prepare for Skyline.”
Come game night, the Mustangs were unable to keep the Hawks at bay, falling behind in the first few minutes of the game. Meridian also turned the ball over on the Hawks five-yard line, a play which erased a scoring opportunity. Albeit, Meridian did find some offensive success later in the half, with a 60 yard pass to Duke Dawson marking their first big play of the night.
Unfortunately, the efforts from the ‘Stangs did not prove to be enough, and they would eventually lose the game 22-8, ending their bid for a playoff run.
With the season now over, the Mustangs have a clean slate, and are optimistic for the next season.
