As per tradition, the Met Gala took place on May. 4, and fundraised for the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art’s “Costume Art” exhibition. This coincided with this year’s Gala’s theme of “Costume Art,” as celebrities from around the world celebrated the night with art inspired fashions.
The night left viewers in awe; dazzled by guests sporting some of the most unique looks in Met Gala history. One of the standout looks from the night was from model and podcaster, Emma Chamberlin. Chamberlain wore a custom Mugler dress that resembled swatches of paint.
Inspired by her dad who is an artist, Chamberlain’s look was a fan favorite among viewers. “I loved Emma Chamberlain’s look,” remarked junior Jasmine Pardue.
Another look from the night was Beyoncé’s embellished skeletal inspired gown designed by Olivier Rousteing. The singer arrived with her husband Jay Z and daughter Blue Ivy, claiming the inspiration for the night was “Family.”
While many questioned how the look connected to the Gala’s theme, the look was inspired by a lithograph of a skeleton from 1944. When asked about resemblance to the theme, junior Luke Flinter replied saying “I can’t really tell.”
Actress Nicole Kidman wore a red, sequined Chanel dress embellished with feathers around her waist. While there was no reference to a specific art work, Kidman noted that she wore the dress because of its vibrant red color, and how the color has been used in art over time.
Many viewers called the look into question noting its lack of resemblance to the theme and odd design. Junior Tilda Saks commented with a similar gusto: “She looks like a bird,” she expressed.
A fan favorite look of the night was Sabrina Carpenter’s Dior ensemble. This heavily referenced the 1954 film “Sabrina” starring Audrey Hepburn, showcasing Hollywood’s role in the arts. The bodice of the dress was made out of actual tapes of the film, and Carpenter wore a headband with the word “Sabrina” inscribed on it.
Senior Linnea Chapman had much appreciation for the look, stating “Film is a type of art, so her entire dress was made from film from the movie.”
Another look which viewers questioned was Bad Bunny’s. The singer arrived on the carpet as an 80 year old man, wearing hyper realistic makeup and prosthetics to achieve this aged appearance. While the look was certainly unexpected, many wondered how it connected to the theme. While some argue it’s about reflecting on one’s mortality, many thought the ensemble lacked any actual resemblance to the theme.
