On May. 11, Administration and SCA decided to host a field day instead of the usual spring pep rally. This was supposed to be hosted by every class council with each class participating in a different activity. The event was planned last minute, but it was meant to be a fun alternative.
Yet, months in advance, the school already planned a mandatory field trip for freshmen to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. This interfered with the time of the field day, making it clear that Admin and SCA chose to leave out the entire freshman class.
This aggravated many of the freshmen.
Freshman Juliana Hefferan stated her opinion on the injustice, stating, “I think it was a little unfair to plan it on the same day we had a museum focused solely on the Holocaust. I understand this date was planned in advance, but it seems a little odd that there was no way to fix it so freshmen could be involved.”
Another student voiced a similar stance on the exasperating topic.
“I find it really frustrating that the freshmen had to go through a difficult field trip even though everyone else had a field day that we have not yet experienced,” Freshman Daniel Tanimura expressed.
Even freshman SCA members mentioned their grievances with this matter.
“I feel like it was really unfair, considering the fact that our field trip was planned months before field day. Maybe they could have moved it to next week so that all of the student body could be a part of it,” Sophia Riccobono, SCA freshman class board member, shared. “It just seems that freshmen aren’t really cared for like the other grades. Considering freshmen don’t really get to do much since it’s their first year, I don’t think it’s fair.”
Additionally, when asked why she thought Admin planned the dates this way, Sophia answered, “We asked if we could change the date and the executive board and administration said no due to this being the only day available because of the short notice of this. The field trip was planned months before, and the least they could have done was look at the calendar and move field day to make it fair for everyone.”
Field days and pep rallies are supposed to bolster school spirit, however, this time it most definitely brought it down for the freshman class.
